Gas Mixtures and Partial Pressures?
Two gases are contained in gas bulbs connected by a valve. Gas A is present in a 1 liter bulb at a pressure of 999 torr. Gas B exerts a pressure of 218 torr in a 1 liter bulb. The valve is opened and the two gases equilibrate. What is the partial pressure of gas A expressed after equilibration? Answer in units of torr.
Yeah im having trouble figuring out the partial pressures in these kind of situations.

use boyles law first
start by looking into gas A only. initially it is contained in V = 1L . finally it will spread out into V = 2L
if its initial pressure was 999 torr the final pressure will be
V1 x P1 = V2 x P2
1L x 999 = 2L x P2
rearranging we have P2 = 1L x 999 / 2L = 499.5 torr
In the mixture of the two gases, this then is the partial pressure due to gas A
now look at gas B only. initially it is contained in V = 1L . finally it will spread out into V = 2L
if its initial pressure was 218 torr the final pressure will be
V1 x P1 = V2 x P2
1L x 218 = 2L x P2
rearranging we have P2 = 1L x 218 / 2L = 109 torr
In the mixture of the two gases, this then is the partial pressure due to gas B.
the total pressure due to both gases spread in the two bulbs is
499.5 + 109 = 608.5 torr
