What is the etiquette for tipping at a counter?
Where I live, it seems every restaurant/deli counter/pizza to-go, etc. has a tip jar! I understand tipping a barista if he/she make you a drink to order, but do I really need to tip someone just for ringing my pizza or sandwich up? Do I need to tip if they hand me a bottled drink? I know that these behind-counter employees are making at least minimum wages, unlike a bartender or waitress. I am a heavy tipper, as I am in the service industry, so these tip jars everywhere are giving me guilt. Is this getting out of control or is it just me?
I normally don't put money in tip jars for counter service. I normally don't see the point. If a person has gone out of their way (say went down into the storage basement to get an ingredient that they usually don't offer but I want and they know they have) that's different. I'll tip then, they actually went above and beyond and gave great customer service. There's no reason to tip for pouring a coffee (or a barista for that matter - it's their job to make the coffee, why are they different?)
I usually tip well, but I think this country (US) has gone TIP-CRAZY.
edit: here is why I see a difference. Many service people (like those parking cars and carrying bags) are paid a straight amount (say $100) for the night, they are really making money and living on tips. They are also expected to pay taxes on these tips (the govt looks for it in certain jobs), I am almost positive that these counter people are not.
